Thomas Elsley was a master craftsman who left an indelible mark on the world of decorative arts. His firm was first eponymous firm was first established in 1839 and soon became renowned for its exceptional range of fire grates and other decorative pieces. In the 19th century, the fireplace was the centrepiece of any room and had an almost mythical significance since it was the primary source of heat, and often light. This led to fire grates being seen as works of art, and Elsley produced some of the finest examples

Thomas Elsley was one of the pioneers of the neo-classical movement which was inspired by the majesty and symmetry of Greco-Roman architecture. Thanks to his mastery of steel, iron, and copper, Elsley deftly captured the awe-inspiring accomplishments and might of these bygone civilizations, with some of his fire grates bearing a striking resemblance to the temples of antiquity.

The inspiration he drew from the natural world is evident from the somewhat organic appearance of many of his pieces, along with detailed renderings of leaves and flowers. This, coupled with the symmetry and immovability of the neo-classical elements leads to a beautiful artistic paradox: the pieces embody steadfast permanence yet simultaneously invoke a sense of fluidity and organic vitality.

Today, it is no surprise that Thomas Elsley’s fire grates are highly sought-after by collectors and homeowners alike. We are proud to have had the privilege of restoring so many of these unique pieces.
