An Early 18th Century Wrought Grate (SOLD)

An early 18th century polished wrought-iron grate from Vernon Hill House, Hampshire. The fire grate has a large rectangular fire basket, steel finials mounted on the front fire bars and tall baluster wrought standards. Other details include: copper seams and a rivet-work grill.Vernon Hill House was once owned and named after Admiral Edward Vernon (1684 – 1757) who amongst other roles, was famous for the Battle and capture of Porto Bello in 1739 and also for the introduction of naval ‘grog’; the addition of water and lemon to his sailors’ daily rum ration.
Mount Vernon, the home of the first American president George Washington, was named after Vernon, since Washington’s elder brother served under Edward Vernon, and gave it his name. Circa 1740. Height of burning area: 8
